Celestial gardening was another name for alchemical practice which was based in ritual. Alchemists revered nature and their rich imagery included four birds in particular: swan, raven, peacock and phoenix.
The birds related to the four seasons, compass directions, elements, humours, and had their own symbolic colours. They are placed on a symbol of the labyrinth representing the journey of life, with the Philosopher’s Egg at the centre.
